Those beautiful bodies that the public see’s on television during a live fashion show comes at a price, obviously we know some models starve themselves or eat hardly anything to stay thin, an article on yahoo news explained how some victorias secret model have gone with the low sugar and low carb to no carb diet. These models have tremendous pressure to keep a tight and toned body and maybe at there own heath’s risk. Unlike a magazine where models shoot pics and then the final pics get sent to the editor to touch up and enhance features with photoshop, these models strut their stuff life on a catwalk in front of judges and live audience. With this intense pressure to stay thin and toned what are little girls thinking who are coming into their teenage years think about all this and how it may affect their lives. Tv and magazines that promote these runway fashion shows where women dress in panties and bra, teen girls could be influenced by this, have feeling of doubt, insecurities, develop a low self esteem, they are all possible factors that can occur to teens and young adults. Who decides what is beautiful or sexy or what to wear or not to wear? the media? Well it’s definitely part of the equation. The media has a huge impact on our society and can shape who we are in this reality.

I recently had the opportunity to fly on the airline Virgin America and if anybody knows what I am talking about great! This particular airline surpasses other air travel in many ways from customer service to the amazing features and technology offered when your a passenger. Virgin has brought the technology and media world to a new level! As a passenger, everyone has the pleasure of a LCD screen in the head rest of each seat for viewing pleasure of live television, Internet access, video gaming, instant messeging between passengers in all parts of the aircraft, ability to order food and beverages all at the touch of a finger! It is truly amazing, this advanced. computer system is called “red.” with this new technology comes new opportunity for advertisers to sell products and expand marketing stratagies, while I had the chance to mess around with the device I must of had been thrown well over 50 different ads for me to buy a certain product. don’t get me wrong the flight was very entertaining and relaxing I recommend you all see for yourself what I’m talking about it’s fun.

Health Magazine

I recently received my monthly issue of Mens Heath Magazine and I decided to look at the magazine from a different perspective instead of getting caught up in reading every little think like I usually do. Anyway on the cover of the mag was a picture of our new President Barack Obama with the punch phrase of “strong and fit.” As I read through the mag I took into account how many different races were featured in the mag as well as the demographics the magazine is trying to appeal towards. I found that there was well over 100 advertisements with white males alone and some including white females, there were very few African American males somewhere in the mid 10s. There were no latinos, asians,middle eastern, or anything else of that matter in this magazine at all it was mainly a bunch of white males and occasionally white females that were portrayed as objects of sexual desire for the most part. All the adds in the mag had to do with men fragrances, wrist watches, articles of expensive clothing, high performance vehicles, etc. It was obviously targeted towards middle aged and order. Don’t get me wrong there is some pretty useful stuff out of this magazine that I find very helpful when it comes to health tips and working out, but I try to be conscious of where these articles are coming from and who is writing them.

Lexus Billboard Ad

While I was driving earlier I caught a huge brand new Ad for a all new Lexus sedan sports car called the lS F 2009. The part that really got my eye was the company’s way of getting attention for this car. Not only did they display a beautiful picture of the car and how much horsepower, 460hp, They threw in some spice by adding this sentence to go out on. “Worth going to Traffic School for” I started laughing when I read that. So basically Lexus motor-company is selling a car targeted toward men mostly, middle aged, high class, to purchase this all new performance vehicle. The ad didn’t mention anything about the price tag, but I could tell it had to be very pricey. Basically its got all the power u’ll ever need and its “worth getting a speeding ticket in.” Way to go Lexus promote people to drive really fast and reckless. Nice marketing touch I much say. Hey they obviously accomplished their goal to get my attention, but Im not the target audience, nor could I afford such a vehicle, but I would love one!!!

Burger King Ad

While I was watching Tv recently I came across a new Burger King Ad I guess. It was very clever, They had a young man holding the all new chicken sandwich, as he was walking across the street in a careless euphoric state he is about to get hit by a bus, at that very moment they flash his life before his eyes with family events and accomplishments. Right when they end the bus misses him and he states I lived a good life while biting slowly into this meaty delicious looking sandwich they zoom in on. At the end of the commercial it says something like live good. So they are insinuating to us the consumers to eat at burger king and you live a happy eventful life that flashes right before you. They got the idea across and I do give them credit for coming up with more and more clever ways of getting consumers to eat at their restaurants. It’s kind of funny when you think about it all these fast food companies are trying to appeal to our emotions these days it seems like, with dramatic music or excitement.

Microsoft offers reward for missing Xbox gamer

According to the article a boy recently ran away from home after his father took away his X-Box. A quote from the article, “His father told local media he had removed Brandon’s Xbox, built by Microsoft, after noticing changes in behavior since Brandon started playing “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” online.” The father noticed his son starting to skip school, steal money and ignore his studies. The missing boy named Brandon, age 15 has not been seen for about two weeks. This is a perfect example how (media) video games affects children. Video games came be a very powerful form of influence. Now not to say this young boy ran away strictly in result of his father taking away his game console, I don’t know that, there could be more to the story then meets the eye, but It definitely had some major contribution. Furthermore, there has been a reward place in their local newspaper. According the article the family’s Internet service provider and Child Find offered a 25,000-dollar (19,500-dollar US) reward for information leading to his return. Better yet when Microsoft heard of the news the company topped it up with another 25,000 dollars. Microsoft is the maker of the game console Xbox and game creator of “Call of Duty 4.” Apparently this young boy Brandon is an avid video gamer, it has taken over his identity and control of his life. Hopefully the family will get some information of his where abouts and be returned safely home!

Presidential politics: Endorsement time

With the election 15 days away we are closing in on a race till then end. In my own opinion, I believe it’s going to be extremely close on November 4th! But in the mean time these presidential candidates are receiving big endorsement bucks from celebrities and political leaders. Such people as: Hillary Clinton, Caroline Kennedy and the AFL-CIOhave endorsed Obama. President Bush, Gov. Schwarzenegger and the NRA have endorsed McCain. Some highly respected Republicans have turned parties and will being voting for Obama. Colin Powell, Christopher Buckley, William F. Buckley‘s son, endorsed Obama. As far as celebrities in the Hollywood scene, actors like Matt Damon and the Baldwin brothers have donated towards Obama’s campaign. I think that is a very nice gesture to support your political leaders and I respect these peoples decisions, but the way John McCain responded to the endorsement from Hollywood celebrity Heidi Montag was extremely TACKY and a waste of time. Quote from John McCain “I’m honored to have Heidi’s support and I want to assure her that I never miss an episode of ‘The Hills,’ especially since the new season started.” Give me a break! I hope he was kidding. Like this man has the time to sit down and watch a worthless fake reality show like ”The Hills.” As well- like this girl actually knows the first thing about John McCain (political views on the economy, foreign policy, structure of the government, social policy, history, beliefs). You know what I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt to be fair, Yea right!! We are seeing the media in full force here to promote these Celebrities and Highly recongnized Political leaders help back the two running presidential candidates. It will be in Gossip magazines of all kinds to try and persuade the public to vote for a particular leader. “Hey if Heidi Montag from the Hills is voting for McCain and providing funding then hey maybe I should vote for him” REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU VOTE FOR GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!!!!! LAST DAY TO REGISTER IS TODAY OCT 20th.

Considering our course just went over the media realm of video gaming I cam across this very interesting article. For those of you that are not up to date with computer gaming. World of War Craft is one of today’s most popular games out there on the market. Gamers put in hours upon hours with this particular game. That is an understatement! Considering this particular gamer plays 36 Characters on 11 different computers at once! This user has multiple accounts setup with “WOW”. According to the article “ his single-player raid machine, such as his six-month subscription plan for each of the accounts, which runs him $5,711 annually. He also plans to pick up 36 copies of the title’s upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, which he estimates will cost him $1,500. The price doesn’t bother Prepared, who remarks, “there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft.” Yes, like that black tar heroin “hobby” our uncle Marco recently took up.” The user states its just a hobby and there are more expensive hobby’s out there than this. Umm but most hobby’s don’t require you to sit in front of a computer screen or in his case A WHOLE lot of screens and game for Hours or even days! This is a true form of an addictive personality towards video gaming. The video game industry is one of the fasting growing and most profitable assets in the electronic world today. “WOW has over 5 million online users and will continue to grow and become a multi million dollar corporation. This particular user “Prepared” maybe prepared for serious gaming, but what about ones health risk? eating, sleeping, physical activity. Gaming is an awesome and powerful escape from this world but it needs to be done in moderation, I believe. Being in a sedentary state for 8 or more hours would drive me insane. Not to mention how much finances a user is putting towards gaming from the cpu’s, WOW accounts, electricity. It adds up. This particular gamer is a true fan.

Hmm where do I begin, I mean this website is just so useful and beneficial to the public I don’t why anyone would not want to know when Britney Spears breaks a nail or relationship drama between celebrity couples. If you didn’t realize by now I am trying to be sarcastic. Now before anyone calls me out if they’ed like to than thats fine I respect your opinion. This is just my opinion and my outlook on this garbage. I actually never knew about this yahoo link until signed out of my mail account and a pop up came and it was this website provided by yahoo.com. Personally I think it is a joke. We (the public) don’t need anymore worthless and waste of time garbage reading about hollywood celebrities. There are already plenty of fashion and gossip mags that have celebs in them and talk about their problems and dis-functional families. Bottom line this is worthless to me, and yes I dont have to read it of course and yes there are readers out there that enjoy reading up on celebrities, thats completely fine. I just think these writers and publishers for yahoo should stop wasting their time to give the american public this crap. Really what is the purpose? How does it help us as a society? How does it benefit us to know that J-Lo and Marc anthony are having problems?? who cares. It’s their personal life and their business not ours. This website obviously brings in a lot of hits because it looks popular. Big money maker.

Slim Hopes film- Advertising and the obsession with thiness

I watched this great documently called “slim hopes” the other day and it was quite interesting and re-enforing to me. In a nut shell it basically talked about the advertismenting industry and how it spends over 6 billion dollars a year on ad marketing. Diet and food ads are designed to get you to eat this food rather than that food as well as attach emotional reward and satisfaction in purchasing the food and consuming it. In the film it described and spoke for women’s wishes. Middle aged women and teenage girls- biggest concern is weight. Women of all ages wish to be thinner. It really stressed self image and world views. Basically according to article the standard of beauty is unobtainable and this is the driving force of economic activity!! Some women will go to great lengths in order to reach that unfathomable look by purchasing beauty products and clothing. They get sucked in unfortunately. Interesting documentary! Take it for what it is and not over look it. There is obviously some bias attached. Once again corporate america at its finest hour making that one and only thing they are looking for, Maximize profits!! Capitalistic society
